Inside: accommodation at CaSale is spread over two floors and centred around the large open-plan living area, complete with comfy and panoramic lounge, a decorative grand piano (not playable), and a dining table looking out over the gardens and sea. Three large French windows provide direct access to the external terraces and gardens and allow the Sicilian sun to illuminate the interiors, with their high, wood-beamed ceilings. Modern artwork by Bilal Chahal, immaculate marble floors, contemporary furniture and designer lighting blend with more traditional antique pieces that recall the house’s former life.
Off the living and dining area is a modern, fully-equipped kitchen, also with French windows, and four of the five bedrooms (two doubles and two doubletwins), each with their own external access and en-suite shower rooms. Two have views of the garden, pool and the sea.
A flight of stairs leads to the first floor, home to the main double bedroom, complete with large en-suite shower room, sea views and its own panoramic terrace surveying the vineyard, sea and the Egadi Islands to one side, and Erice to the other. The villa, which has been owned by the same family for over 200 years, was totally and lovingly restored in 2011-2012.
Outside: the lawned garden and terraces at the front of the house look out over the vineyards, the sea and the Egadi Islands, and provide a perfect setting for the inviting pool. This west-facing garden, complete with a shady al fresco dining area and lots of good quality garden furniture, is perhaps at its most seductive in the late afternoon, as the suns begins to plunge, fiery orange and
lustrous red, into the sea: sunset-lovers will not be disappointed!
CaSale is ideally situated for an exploration of western Sicily. The nearby towns of Trapani, Erice and Marsala all boast beautifully restored centres with fascinating histories and some great restaurants. The Phoenician island of Mozia is just a few km away. The evocatively beautiful and ancient salt pans where migrating flamingoes nest are right in front of the house, as is Lo Stagnone, a lagoon that has become a mecca for kitesurfers. The beaches to the south of Marsala, in Trapani and at San Vito Lo Capo are some of the finest in Sicily, and day trips to the beautiful Egadi Islands will take you to another
dimension of laid back relaxation (just a 20-minute hydrofoil ride from Trapani). If all that weren’t enough, the dramatic Greek sites of Segesta and Selinunte are within easy striking distance too.
